An analysis of the Open Source Software platform and hardware used to deploy and operate the DataBreeze Web database application.

At DataFree Corporation we believe that the best architecture for stable, secure and high performance Web Applications is founded on Open Source software. There are many ways to get there, and our efforts have focused on some of the most popular Open Source technologies available.

The major players are Linux, Perl, Apache, and MySQL (or substitute your favorite SQL database here). All of these technologies are widely accepted, stable and of the highest quality.

Overview of the Open Source software platform

  • Open Source Software describes software that makes available the 'source code' used to compile the software into binary format.
    • Linux is the Free Open Source Unix operating system that is available for free.
    • Perl is an Free Open Source Programming language with free Open Source modules:
    • Apache is an Free Open Source Web Server with optional Free Open Source modules:
      • mod_perl is used to speed the execution of Perl code within Apache.
      • mod_ssl is used to provide optional Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encrypted transmission.
      • mod_proxy is optionally used to break up the system for scalability.
      • mod_rewrite is optionally used separate calls for dynamic mod_perl content from static documents.
    • MySQL is the lightweight SQL database used for data storage.
